SpareKeys -Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What area do you cover?

The best general answer is mainland England, Wales and Scotland.

The areas are split up as follows:

  • Glasgow and Edinburgh covering Scotland
  • Newcastle covering the North East
  • Manchester covering the North West and North Wales
  • Birmingham covering the Midlands and Mid Wales
  • Bristol covering the South West and South Wales
  • London covering the South East

Will you deliver outside of these areas?

Yes.  We'll deliver to the top of Everest if you want us to.  Special rates will apply, but only to cover our extra costs, and we won't guarantee any delivery times.

Let us know your situation, and we'll find a way to help you out as quickly and cheaply as we can.

How do you ensure our keys aren't delivered to the wrong person?

All our security vetted couriers deliver your keys as their sole assignment for any given delivery. We deliver to you and to no-one else on that callout, we never try to squeeze extra value out of our courier routes.

How many keys can I send to SpareKeys.com?

You can send up to ten items on a key ring. That'll comfortably cover you for your front door, your car, your car alarm bleeper and your office, and still leave room for your gym locker, your favourite key ring and your mother's house key.

Please note, if you are sending a key that doesn't belong to you, you must ensure that you have the owner's permission.

Of course, you can send us as many key rings as you like.  We'll charge you for each one, but you can manage them within the same account.

What happens if I move house or buy a new car?

You can send new keys to be added to your key ring at any time.  Just let us know, and we'll email you a code to print and send with the new keys.  They'll be added to your key ring when they arrive.

We'll even let you go over the ten key limit to twelve keys, until your next emergency call out.  Just make sure you don't send back more than ten!

What we cannot do for you is remove keys from your key ring.  Only you can do that, when you have them delivered.

How does SpareKeys.com identify my keys when they arrive, if I send them without my details?

That's an easy one. As soon as you sign up, we send you a unique number and barcode by email, which you print off and send with your keys. When they arrive, we zap them with our barcode laser, and we know immediately which keys they are. To be absolutely sure, we photograph the keys and email the picture to you.

What happens if I don't pay?

Your membership is automatically renewed every year.  If, for some reason, your card doesn't allow this payment, we'll let you know and give you a week to sort it out, with no reduction in service.

After a week, if the payment still hasn't arrived, your keys will be put in Deep Storage.  They are perfectly safe there, and of course you can get them back, but they can only be retrieved from deep storage with 48 hour's notice.  If you need them from Deep Storage in an emergency, that's not a problem - but we'll have to charge you £50, on top of the £39 renewal.

What happens if I want to cancel?

We don't think that you will - less than a half of a percent of our members do.  But of course, you are very welcome to.  Just let us know and we'll arrange the return of your keys at normal call out rates.  No penalty, no fuss.

Can I send you an electronic key?

Of course!  If your car keys or alarm key fob have batteries in them, we'll even check them before we send them out to you, so you can be sure they'll work when they arrive.  If the battery has died while in storage, we'll provide a replacement, free of charge.

Is there a limit to the number of rescues I can ask for?

No.  You can lose your keys a thousand times a year as far as SpareKeys.com is concerned.

I'm a non-member, and I'm locked out.  Can you help me?

Of course!  SpareKeys.com is the first port of call for any Key Disaster.  We'll do what we can for you, and help you find a reputable, local locksmith, who may even give you a SpareKeys.com discount.

But locksmiths do tend to take their time, and they are rather expensive.  Maybe next time you will have sent us your spare keys so we'll be able to look after you properly.

How do I get my keys back to you after a delivery?

The same way you got them to us in the first place - by post.  Although we recommend that you send them to us in a jiffy bag and by registered post.

The SpareKeys.com courier that delivers them to you will NOT bring them back for you.  To guarantee your security, the returns process must be initiated and monitored by our computers.

Did we miss anything?  Email us if we can help with anything else - we'll answer you within minutes, 24/7.
